Advise on finding new motor insurance polices

When your looking for a new insurance policy there are few factors you need to address to make sure you get the cheapest quote for yourselves and the cover you need:

  1. Shop around
It may seem simple but I can ensure it’s very effective. Even if it takes you a few hours to find the best quote for yourself, the money you could save can be quite considerable. Its even easier now with the price comparison websites and they are the best route to take along as you check the details online before you buy a policy.

  2. Change is good
Many people stick with the same insurance companies because they don’t get round to changing it. They get a renewal notice and decide to keep with the same insurance, as it’s easier because they don’t have to do anything. However if you do decide to change, you again can save a substantial amount of money. Even if originally your current insurance policy was the best for you, your circumstances might have changed or new offers might have appeared resulting in a new policy with a new insurance company being much cheaper.

  3. Tell the truth
Its true some people don’t disclose the truth to try and get cheaper polices but its also true that people are not accurate enough with their details so it costs them more. I.e. if you are a wages clerk and put on the policy clerk instead of the accurate title of clerk, it will increase your premiums with most insurance companies.

  4. Regular drivers
Make sure that only regular drivers are named on the policy. You can always add someone for a few days when they really need to drive the car.

  5. Read the small print
When buying a policy, especially when done online remember to read the small print and the details of the policy. If a policy is much cheaper than what you’re used to it’s usually because there is something missing from it or there is a large excess built into the policy. When you use a comparison website, they only take basic details from yourself and get quotes from various websites. The resulting quotes may look attractive but you will need to check to see if they include the cover you need ie business cover or european cover. Only when you have added all the endorsements you need should you compare the prices to find the best quote for you.

  6. Add ons
When you have purchased a policy, the broker usually tries to sell you some extras witch are separate from the policy. These are a big part of their income and are usually not needed by the person buying the policy. For example legal cover is usually offered. This would cover losses that are not covered by your insurance ie loss of earnings, injury and like for like hire. Legal cover costs as little as £10 but when you consider that there are legal/management companies who will offer these services for free in event of a non fault accident, its not really worth it. Other add ons that might be offered are breakdown cover. This however can usually be purchased cheaper directly from a breakdown company. The general rule with broker add ons is check if you need it, if you don’t just say no.

  7. Be a better driver
If you take Pass Plus test scheme or an advanced drivers course you can enjoys discounts up to 35% from some of the big insurance companies.

  8. Protect yourself
Protecting your claims may increase your premiums slightly but its well worth it when you consider you could lose up to 60% discount on your policy. I would advise that protecting your claims is a must if you have more than 3 years no claims discount.

  9. Keep your eyes peeled
There is always special offers aimed at different markets. Always keep a look out and if one favours you, take it. Even if you’re half way through a policy you should still change companies/polices if it saves you money.
