Your home is completely safe with 1st Class Cleaners
We very carefully vet our cleaners so that we do not have any problems with theft.

Should a less desirable applicant come to the agency, they will quickly see that it would be very silly to steal anything from a 1st Class Cleaners customer. They also quickly realise that practically anywhere else is easier to steal from and go to those places.

This is because we know :
Their work history
Where they live
Exactly who they are
Who their friends and family are
We employ security experts and work with a number of ex policemen

So they quickly realise it would be very silly to do anything wrong.

1st Class Cleaners has seen many undesirable people approach us, not only do we manage to weed them out even before they have gotten past the first stages of our procedures, but they actually go away on their own accord once they see how much we find out about them. Such people now rarely approach us because the word has gotten out that we work with ex policemen and do not tolerate any nonsense.

In actual fact our security procedures are far more than what is actually needed. We only do it because we clean for very high net worth individuals, members of parliament, diplomats, famous people, professionals where confidentiality is paramount, people who are always surrounded by bodyguards and other high security measures because they need such levels of security.

The staff and services that serve these clients have checked us very carefully to ensure we meet their needs, and we have always passed. This is in part because we have a highly trained security manager on our staff and ex policemen as consultants to the company, they ensure our security in the office and with the cleaners fits these needs.
2 References
The cleaner's references from previous work must show a history of honesty, reliability, good customer service, and ability. Should a cleaner only have one reference, normally as they have been serving one household for a long period of time, which of course is a preferable reference for a cleaner to have. Then we only require the second reference to be a character reference from a friend.

Checking references for authenticity is quite an art and science. Our managers have go through an advanced training course to learn how to ensure that a reference is genuine and that the referee is giving an honest and true appraisal of the cleaner. We go to great lengths to ensure that references are as they should be, and only pass a cleaner once we know that all their references are genuine.
Proof of Address
This must be an original formal document, such as a driving license, utility bill, or bank statement. One which requires substantial other identity documents, or a person living at a premises to obtain.
Identification
This must be a passport, driving license, home office papers or a birth certificate. All our managers are highly trained in this area. The methods and techniques used to forge such documents are regularly changing and advancing, however with the proper knowledge, and special consultants who advice us, we know when we are being presented with real documents, and when we are not. Our reputation is now such that people with such documents do not want to come anywhere near our offices with them, and so go elsewhere.
Permission to work in the UK
The United Kingdom's conditions for people who are not English to be allowed to work in the UK, varies according to their nationality, and is changing all the time. A list of the situation for each type of nationality would be quite long. However 1st Class Cleaners only passes cleaners who are fully legal to work in the UK. We are very strict in this area, both for the protection of our clients, the company and it's reputation. We are tough enough that our reputation is now such, that people who are not legal to work in the UK, know that it is not wise to even approach 1st Class Cleanersfor work, and we do not tolerate such activities.
Next of Kin Details
We not only know where the cleaners live, but also who their friends and family are.
Pass a Domestic Cleaning Interview
Our in depth interviewing, which is the result of our experience in vetting domestic cleaners, is totally effective. We now know who is good and who is not. Should we have any doubts, then we do not pass a cleaner. Interviews can be half an hour and leave both interviewee and interviewer quite tired by the end of it. However by the end of it we know if they really want, and are able to do the job.
Pass An English Test
The english test is very carefully designed to ensure that the cleaner has the necessary level of english to freely and easily communicate with customers. The test is also carefully designed to ensure there is no cheating. For example we:
ask questions that are not normally asked in english tests, so it cannot be prepared for.
For example, instead of asking 'Where do you come from ?', we may ask, 'Please can you tell me a funny story from your childhood ?', or 'Please can you tell me about your best friend ?'
vary the questions so one cleaner cannot tell another cleaner, what is in the test.
ask questions covering all different subjects, to ensure the cleaner understands all the different parts of the english language
Ensure that there is only one cleaner taking the test at any one time, so no other person can help the cleaner pass the test.
Pass a written, oral and practical cleaning and ironing exam in a test flat
This is an essential part of our cleaner vetting.
Practical cleaning exam:
So we can see that the cleaner knows, is experienced, and is well practised in all the cleaning tasks you may ever need.
Oral cleaning exam:
To ensure that domestic cleaners can discuss, advise, and understand the customer's cleaning requirements.
Written cleaning exam:
Enables us to fully understand their knowledge.
These exams are carried out one on one with an examiner, so we really understand each cleaner, and they understand how high our standards are.
Just 1 in 55 Applicants pass our Vetting and Screening
This is because, on average out of 55 applicants:
10. 34 do not pass their initial phone interview, because their english is not good enough, they do not have permission to work in England, CV is not good enough, or for other such reasons.
11. 4 are invited for interview, and are either late or do not turn up.
12. 4 of them when they come do not have proper references, identification, proof of address, permission to work in England and next of kin details.

Of the remaining 13:

13. 2 do not pass their domestic cleaning interview.
14. 3 do not pass their practical, written and oral cleaning exam.
15. 5 fail our reference verification, or their references are just not good enough.
16. 3 do not pass the test at the end of our training course.

Passing our initial vetting and screening is only the beginning, as we carefully monitor them throughout their time with our customers. We expect the best possible standards from the cleaners throughout their cleaning career. Many cleaners are also filtered out should they become complacent in their work or not match our standards at any stage.

Cleaning Training & Monitoring
Domestic Cleaning Service Training
Our training course has been carefully designed by our experienced managers, and an experienced cleaning chemical chemist. There are never more than 5 cleaners on the training course, it is all done personally by an instructor, and we never use videos. It has six modules, each comprises of training with an instructor, and a written, practical and oral test at the end.

Oral instruction:
The instructor verbally instructs and demonstrates to the cleaners how to clean. We also include a cleaning chemicals demonstration accompanied by written course notes. (extracts of this can be seen in our cleaning guide)

Customer Service:
Scheduling, time keeping, honesty, reliability, and all other things a cleaners needs to treat the customer with affection and respect.

Practical Domestic Cleaning training:
Practical cleaning exercises in our test centre. This is where an instructor demonstrates how to clean and the students follow. For example here we can really see if a cleaner knows how to apply cleaning chemicals, scrub, wash them off and then fully dry the surfaces to ensure that hard water is not left behind by water drying and leaving limescale behind.

Green Cleaning:
Green cleaning is not just great for the environment but good for the health of the whole household. The course covers how to create green cleaning materials from household products and how to apply them. This is a new part of the course and as much as we love these methods of cleaning many customers still prefer using chemicals, as a result if you would like green cleaning please tell us and we will supply you with a 'Green cleaning cleaner'.

Health and Safety:
We cover all the important aspects of health and safety and this part of our training has been designed and is overseen by our full time health and safety officer. It covers COSHH (Control of substances hazardous to health) and all the other aspects of modern health and safety.

Cleaning exam:
Field training where they go out on a job with an experienced instructor. After this they are either ready to clean by themselves, or will need to re sit the course, or sadly we may find they are not suitable for presenting to customers. They are only allowed to re sit the course once.

In the training are role playing games, tests, demonstrations involving the cleaners and other such interactive parts of the training that each cleaner in the course is randomly asked to partake in, which along with periodic breaks ensures that cleaners are able to absorb and use the essential materials .

The interactivity of the training also enables the instructor to quickly tell who is a great cleaner and who is not in a way that one can only tell when covering the less common parts of a cleaner's duties.
Cleaner Monitoring:
You can also meet a consultant before you start to ensure we get you the cleaner that is right for you, and perfectly understand your cleaning needs.
Our company consultants are in regular contact with cleaners and customers, and this enables us to carefully ensure that the performance of each cleaner is accurately monitored.
We keep detailed notes on the performance of each cleaner, so that they are properly reviewed on our database, and we expect perfect services from each cleaner.

How can I be Assured that I will be Satisfied
Our clients love our cleaners, and have the comfort of knowing that we have on average 500 carefully vetted cleaners all over London, and they can interview other cleaners and their cleaner as often as they like.

1st Class Cleaners provides domestic cleaning service staff to over 2000 very satisfied households every week. We:
Are the largest non franchised domestic cleaners agency in the UK.
Have branches in Central London, Finchley, Kingston and will be opening soon in Bristol, Guildford, Bromley and St. Albans.
As well as households, we serve large and small companies and organisations, such as all the top lifestyle Management Companies & Concierge Services, Estate Agents, Property Management Companies, Health Centres, Local Councils who use us to clean the homes of people in care with them, schools and so on. Our Cleaner Vetting and Monitoring is very strict. They have to have:
2 written references which we carefully check
Proof of Address
Identification
Permission to work in England
Next of kin
Passed our oral, written, and practical exams in a test flat, for English, cleaning and customer service.
Our testing is very stringent, and we would be delighted to send you copies of their references, exams and vetting details.
I need some Cleaning Quickly
We have on average 150 cleaners in each area, and can often get a cleaner to you within one hour if you need. For temporary cover or one off cleans this is useful. However for permanent placements, this does mean that we have just 'thrown you a cleaner' and not thought about it carefully. Normally we would carefully go through the database to find a cleaner that will match you perfectly, the more information you have given us about your requirements, the better we can do this. We want to ensure that for many years after the cleaner started with you, you are still incredibly happy with your cleaner, and years later you will only care that your home is beautifully clean, and will not that it originally took the company up to five days to find your person.
Key Security Form
Our careful cleaner vetting and monitoring means that we do not have any problems with key security.

We do however recommend using the Key Security Deposit form with cleaners if you give them keys. This is only because we have never tried giving cleaners keys without using this form
Ironing
Please tell us if you would like ironing, as we will send you a cleaner who can also iron. This is the same hourly rate as cleaning.

We expect domestic cleaners to iron equivalent to a minimum of seven mens working shirts per hour. We use this as a measure of a cleaner's speed, so for example:

a t-shirt is equalivant to 1/5th of a long sleeved man's working shirt.
a pair of trousers are equivalent to 3/4 of a long sleeved man's working shirt.
Our customers love our domestic cleaners to do their ironing for them, and when you look at this speed with the amount that 1st Class Cleanerscharges, this is cheaper than a dry cleaner or launderette, for a service that is much easier and more personal.
Cleaning Materials
We use your cleaning materials. Some customers like the cleaner to leave a note saying what they need, then you can simply add it to your regular supermarket shopping. We also do this because:

It is much more economic. Companies that bring their own cleaning materials have to charge twice as much, due to the cost of a car and it's associated costs, parking, time to bring the materials from parked car and into your home, and back again. Also cleaners with driving licenses are in shorter supply and so are much more demanding, this includes needing to be paid much higher saleries, all in all this leads to much worse cleaning and a higher price.

If you saw how dirty some of the homes we are asked to clean are, you would never want the cleaning materials we used in their home, to be used in yours. On our travels we can meet flees, mites, extreme dirt and all sorts of other horrible things.
Customers like the comfort of buying the cleaning materials they like, so their home can smell and feel exactly how they would like it to.
What is the minimum amount of time a cleaner can come for ?
Once a week or more: Minimum length of visit 2 hours.
Fortnightly: Minimum length of visit 4 hours.
This is because we will only clean a home if we can do it well, to ensure this we only use great cleaners.
The cleaners will go for the best regular domestic cleaning jobs they can get, we have found that a cleaner who is willing to do a job that is less than 2 hours per week, normally accepts it because they cannot get cleaning jobs that are two hours or more. This is normally because the cleaner is not any good.

Also a visit which is less than 2 hours is not economic for the cleaner, by the time they have: Travelled to your home, even if it is close, which is something the agency will do it's best to ensure is the case.
Travelled to their next customer, likewise, even if it is nearby.
Read your requirements, taken the cleaning materials out of the cupboard, put them back, and so on.
All the other things that come up with a job.
Insurance
The Agency Fee includes insurance for damage to property.

There is a £100 excess as it is designed for major damage, and bleach spills are not covered, so you should discourage your cleaner from using cleaning products containing bleach.

The excess is purely because:
For claims under £100 it costs more to process the claim, than the amount of the claim itself.
A good and thorough cleaner will break a glass every few years simply because they are human. If a glass or mug is never broken, it means they are never cleaning anything.

Without the excess, clients were claiming for everything such as an iron that simply broke because it was old, when the cleaner had done nothing wrong with it.
The above increases the price of insurance for all our customers.

The above increases the price of insurance for all our customers.

Key Security: Further information
How Does It Work once I have ordered a cleaner ?
The cleaner will call you directly to organise an interview, they can do evenings, weekends, or whenever is best for you. It takes us on average one working day to allocate you a cleaner, sometimes we manage to do it within two minutes of receiving an order, but please do allow up to 5 working days, just in case.
Interview Tips
Our domestic cleaners are very carefully vetted, however having a cleaner is a very personal thing, and there is a small chance that a cleaner that one person loves, just may not be right for another. If you feel that the cleaner is not the person for you, then please tell the company and we will send you a different person to interview. It is such personal that one of our managers likens us to a dating agency. To avoid embarressment should you want to interview another cleaner, start the interview along the lines that you will inform the company the next day whether or not they have the job. This means if you do not take on that cleaner, you do not have the embarressing end to the interview. However if they are the cleaner for you, then please start with them straight away.
I have Never Had a Cleaner Before

The cleaner is wanting to earn money, and have the respect of doing a good, honest job. You are needing help cleaning your home, and it is a great trade as you need them and they need you.
Simply treat the person with affection and respect like with any person, and they should mutually do the same. We hope that your cleaner loves you, and you love the cleaner, and you will both be very happy.
If that is not the case, we can change the cleaner for you, so that you are with somebody where that is the case. Please do not have any concerns, our managers are always here to help you. We have been doing this for almost 20 years, and have prepared for every contingency.
Getting the best cleaner
This advice applies whether you find the cleaner yourself, use any company or cleaning service.

All our cleaners are great, they have to be to pass our vetting, and are carefully monitored. However there are always things you can do to ensure that your cleaner is the best of the best

The best domestic cleaners tend to have a lot of clients and be fully booked. The best way to have such a cleaner, is to have your cleaner during the less popular times when they will be free.

Fridays are the most popular times, followed by thursdays and mondays; also mornings are more popular then afternoons, evenings and weekends. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are the least popular, and so should you choose these times there will be about 10 times more cleaners to choose from, compared to if you have a cleaner the most popular times.

Clients say that they like to have their cleaning services before the weekend, or after it. Clients are welcome to have this, however we always like to mention that domestic cleaning is a long term proposition. We want to ensure that when you look at your home after having used us for a long period of time, that it is not just the visible places that have been perfectly cleaned, but also the unseen places are perfect as well. This is what having the best cleaner(s) is about.

Of course this is just based on averages, and often really busy cleaners becoming available on popular time slots. The agency can advise you accordingly.

However if proof is needed, our senior managers all have their homes cleaned on a Tuesday or Wednesday. We also find that the senior managers of other domestic cleaning companies do the same.
Key Security: Further information
Cleaners are expressly forbidden to put any labels on keys that may reveal which out of the 25 million homes in the UK, the keys could be for.

We recommend using the Key Security Deposit form

It is proof that they have your keys
The first £10 that they earn, you keep. When they eventually finish working with you and return the keys, they get their £10 back. This is completely fair, as in most jobs a person gets paid a week behind, but with you they get paid the same week that they clean.

Loss of keys is not covered by the insurance company, simply because it is not a problem that 1st Class Cleanershas and yet still the insurance company would charge more for this, which is just more money for the insurance

Domestic Cleaning Service options
There are three easy ways to pay the agency fee, and the cleaner is paid directly by the client.

1, One off cleans
Please see the one off cleaning section.

2, Regular Domestic Cleaning Service
This is by far the most popular as it includes the entire service which we are very proud of.

Insurance, ability to change your cleaner whenever you like, temporary cover cleaners should your cleaner be sick or on holiday, and help and advice from our highly trained and experienced domestic cleaning consultants.

A license to use a cleaner for a certain number of hours per week, which is paid quarterly.

The Agency fee is only due once we have allocated you a cleaner from the database, so we have found you a cleaner. You can change the cleaner whenever you want to, and have temporary cleaners to cover your regular cleaner's sickness and holidays. For example if you use the cleaner for 2 hours per week, then it would be 2 hours * 13 weeks = 26 hours.

3, Introduction Fee

Although many customers love this, it is not as popular because it does not include insurance, ability to change your cleaner and temporary cover cleaners.

This entitles you to pay a one off introduction fee, and then use the cleaner forever for the pre agreed amount of time per week.

It is just £500 plus 4 times what the quarterly agency fees would be for that amount of usage per week.

If a cleaner is used, quarterly payments are not in place, and it is not the date and time of a pre agreed one off clean, then this is the fee that is due.

Why is Cleaner & Agency Paid Seperately ?
A big secret to how we manage to vet, train, insure and monitor our domestic cleaners to such a high degree, with such a low agency fee, is that the money is going directly into doing that work, and not just adminstration. If you paid us, and we paid the cleaner for you, you would be paying:
VAT on top of the amount paid to the cleaner
Cost of the agency running a payroll
In depth health and safety policy, as any company employing more than a few people has much greater legal obligations

Consequently either the service or amount paid to the cleaner would be lower.

Agency Fee Debited Quarterly from my Credit or Debit Card
With cheque payments, each quarter we would have to 'remind customers to pay', with recurring credit card payments this is not needed. This is so we can:
Charge such a low price for such a great service
Vet, train, and manage the cleaners to an incredibly high degree
You do not pay anything until we have allocated you a cleaner from the database, so we have found you a cleaner. You can change that cleaner whenever you want to, and have temporary ones to cover your regular cleaner's sickness or holidays.

Your credit and debit card details are completely safe
We use the world's most secure systems, they are the same as the top banks use:
1 Our website is secured by the same system that all the banks use on their internet banking. It is called AES-256KB encryption, for many years there has been a well known prize of $1 000 000 for the first person who can break it, despite many enthusiastic attempts no one has managed it.
2 Our server has been inspected and given a certificate by Thawte Consulting CC, they only give certificates to completely secure sites. Thawte certificates are approved by Microsoft and all the other large and respected internet companies.
3 HSBC bank have inspected and approved our site, so much so that they have even allowed us to put their logo on our credit and debit card ordering page.
4 Even with all the internet security above, the first thing we do when receiving your order is remove your credit or debit card details from our website server, to a computer that is not even attached to the internet. Thus it is completely impossible for anyone to get to them. This computer is completely secure, with two levels of password protection, and is only accessible to our highest level accounts executives. All our staff have also signed trust and confidence agreements.
5 As a final level of security all activity on this isolated system is recorded and tracked, so that each computer operator's activities are recorded. Thus there are copies of screen shots, buttons pressed, files transferred and all other such activities so that there is all the evidence should anyone be silly enough to try it.
6 We are registered under the Data Protection Act, and we comply with all of its provisions.

In actual fact these 6 levels are far more than is actually needed.

This is in part because we have a highly trained security manager on our staff and ex policmen as consultants to the company, they ensure our security in the office and with the cleaners fits these needs.
Holiday Pay
We recommend that your home cleaner is given one week's paid holiday for every 12 weeks they have worked.
That week's pay is the average their earnings over those 12 qualifying weeks.
Ironing
This is the same hourly rate as cleaning. Please tell us if you would like ironing, as we will allocate you a cleaner who can also iron. We expect domestic cleaners to iron equivalent to a minimum of seven mens working shirts per hour. We use this as a measure of a cleaner's speed, so for example
a t-shirt is equalivant to 1/5th of a long sleeved man's working shirt
trousers are equivalnt to 3/4 of a long sleeved man's working shirt

Our customers love our domestic cleaners to do their ironing for them, and when you look at this speed with the amount that 1st Class Cleaners charges, this is cheaper than a dry cleaner or launderette, for a service that is much easier and more personal.
Should I pay my cleaner more ?
Cleaners love 1st Class Cleaners because:
If they are good, we can fill their entire schedule within one week
We get them temporary jobs to cover them while then their customers go on holiday.
We help the cleaners with issues such as personal safety, if a customer is naughty and does not pay them for their work, we chase the customer for them, and so on.

When cleaners try and get work themselves, they have all the problems of:
It takes them a long time to get it, and is a lot of work.
During this time they have no work, and are not earning any money.
They usually end up only being partly booked up
When their customers go on holiday, they do not have any work

We are able to get as many great domestic cleaners as needed, at the price we recommend you pay, so there really is no need to pay more. You will also find that the cleaning results are determined by how good the cleaner is, and this is a result of our vetting and management. Paying more does not improve the cleaning service you will get.
Why do prices differ by area ?
Prices differ by area because of:
The varying supply and demand of domestic cleaning in each area. This means they have to be paid differing amounts in each area, and also makes it harder or easier for the company to find good cleaners, which affects the company's costs of doing so.
The effect is also the same for the company when finding good local consultants.
The cost of the insurance that the company provides to you, also varies by area.
To Stop Using the Service
Your access to the database of cleaners, right to use a cleaner from the database, and insurance, continues up to the end of each payment period, which is the minimum period. To cancel the quarterly payments agency fee, just write in one month before the end of the period. This is because:
The cleaners need income, customers were cancelling, giving us half a days notice. However it can take us half a month to find the cleaner another suitable client, organise an interview, and there is always a couple of weeks while the cleaner and customer have each other 'on trial', while they find out if they are happy with each other.
We have to pay for your insurance cover at the beginning of each period. To ensure you have perfect seemless cover this is done well before each quarter starts.
Please note that after you have cancelled your quarterly payments agency fee, you do not have a right to use a cleaner from our database. Should you ever use any of them, then the agency introduction fee is due as on your contract and this website.
Please note that cancelling the quarterly payments agency fee means that you no longer have to pay for, or have access to the database of cleaners. You would need this access should you ever want to change your cleaner, or have temporary cover ones. It also means you do not have insurance.
What are my Payments for ?
You are paying for:
Access to a database of cleaners
The right to use a cleaner from the database
Insurance
The agency 'membership' fee is based upon the average number of hours you have the right to use a cleaner from the Agency database, should you have the cleaner for more hours, then more is payable. The fee remains payable, much like the fee for a sports club, car breakdown service, internet access subscription, insurance or other such service, whether or not you choose to take advantage of the database, use the cleaner, or insurance.

This is because we still have to keep our database full of good quality cleaners, who are available for one off and regular jobs, and this is constant work. We also still have to pay your cleaner consultant who is always on hand, and your insurance which is a large percentage of the agency fee, whether or not you decide to take advantage of the service or not.

About the Service
It is used by all the top Lifestyle Management and Concierge Services, Estate Agents and Property Management Companies. Also many London Councils use it for cleaning schools and also cleaning its care homes. This is in addition to the many, many private households that love this service.
Why the Price?
It is over twice the price that most regular customers pay, but this is because:
Customers love our one off cleaning service because we put so much work into doing it perfectly. Our highly trained consultants take down your order very carefully so that we understand your needs, allocate the best cleaner for the job, brief the cleaner about the job, and the other such administration costs for just one clean are very high if it is to be done properly. With regular customers all these costs are spread over their many cleans, whereas with one off cleans these are all in one clean.
The one off cleaning service is the very highest possible standard and is used by some of London's most discerning households. The cleaners are very carefully vetted, selected, monitored and insured.
Why does 1st Class Cleaners use my Cleaning Materials ?
We use your cleaning materials, so there are not the costs and problems of:
A Vehicle
Parking
Taking cleaning materials from the van to your home
The extra cost of cleaners who have driving licenses, who also are never as good.
Some houses we see are so unhygeinic (including mites etc.) that we would have to disinfect all cleaning materials before taking them to your home.
Why does 1st Class Cleaners not do a Quote Beforehand ?
The cost of a manager coming first to quote, would literally double the price. The companies that come with cleaning materials and do a quote before hand, charge about £35 + VAT. They often cover this up by saying they charge for the job, then only stay for a short time, so this ends up being the price.

How much time will the cleaner need ?
Our domestic cleaners are quick and productive, but still human. We recommend customers judge time needed, by how long it would take them to clean the premises, if they were doing it themselves. We tend to find that customer's can judge this better than we can, because customers differ so much in the level of cleaning they require, and the cleanliness of the premises when we arrive.
How Quickly Can 1st Class Cleaners Get me a Cleaner ?
Often within 3 working hours, although sometimes it can be one working day.
Terms and Conditions
1 Two working days are needed for cancellation. (as less than this is not enough time for us to find the cleaner other work)
2 For one off cleans we can perform visits of 4 hours or more (as opposed to regular cleans where it is 2 hours or more)
3 We use client's cleaning materials.
